Description
The Conciergerie, Paris.
Panoramic view of the Conciergerie and the Seine river between the Pont au Change and the Pont Neuf as seen from the north bank.
The Conciergerie is located on the west of the Île de la Cité. It was part of the former royal palace, the Palais de la Cité, which consisted of the Conciergerie, Palais de Justice and the Sainte-Chapelle.
When the Royal court moved to the Louvre it became a prison. During the French Revolution hundreds of prisoners were taken from the Conciergerie to be executed at the place de la Revolution, now Place de la Concorde, by guillotine. Marie Antoinette was kept there and left the Conciergerie from the gate to the left of the tween towers on her way to her execution. Presently it is used mostly for law courts.
The Pont au Change connects the Île de la Cité from the Palais de Justice and the Conciergerie, to the Right Bank, at the Place du Châtelet. Several bridges bearing the same name have stood on this site. It owes its name to the goldsmiths and money changers who had their shops on an earlier version of the bridge in the 12th century. The current bridge was constructed from in 1860, during the reign of Napoleon III, and bears his imperial insignia.
The Pont Neuf is the oldest standing bridge across the Seine in Paris, and probably the most iconic. It was built by Henry IV around 1600.
As for Paris... what can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
