Description
Siena - Piazza del Campo from Torre de Mangia.
Panoramic view of the Piazza del Campo, from the Torre de Mangia. The Piazza is the main square in Siena, Tuscany, where the Palio horse race takes place twice a year. To the right, the town hall, the torre de Mangia, highest tower of the kind in Italy, and the Cappella di Piazza, the chapel of the square.
There is a vintage version of this image.
The peculiar shape and structure of the square, set on a slope, like a roman theater, turn the Piazza del Campo into the finest square in Italy.
I visited Siena from Florence. Once enemies, Florence came out reinforced after the Black Death devastated Europe, but Siena never recovered. Before they had the chance, Florence invaded and would never permit Siena to grow strong again. Maybe because of that, Siena still preserves its medieval structure and atmosphere, which makes her so beautiful.
